Duo miss out on Portugal trip

TWO Harpenden golfers missed the chance to book a place in the final of Europe's most prestigious pro-am tournament.

Peter Lane, the PGA professional at Harpenden Golf Club, and amateur Ian Hall qualified for the regional final of the Lombard Trophy, held at Old Fold Manor Golf Club on Monday.

The pair needed to win the tournament in the better-ball stableford format to clinch a luxury, expenses-paid five-day trip to the Ocean Course, Vale Do Lobo, Portugal to compete in the grand final in September.

The Harpenden duo finished two under par for the day and around the middle of the 68 teams entered.

Sponsored by The Royal Bank of Scotland and with a prize fund of nearly £80,000, including £10,000 to the winning professional, the Lombard Trophy is now in its 12th year and annually attracts more than 100,000 golfers from across Great Britain and Ireland.
