Nurse cleared of burns death
A MAN who sustained burns while in hospital recovering from an operation died from natural causes, an inquest heard last Thursday.
John Collins, 66, of Brinsmead, , was found with burns on one of his legs after a nurse turned up her Bair Hugger device, used to prevent hypothermia, to the highest setting.
The 26-year-old nurse, who also administered an unduly high dose of the drug Heparin, underwent a lengthy police investigation after the man's death in November 2004.
But coroner Edward Thomas, recording a verdict of natural causes at Hatfield Coroners' Court, said Mr Collins' death had resulted from multiple organ failure brought on by an infection.
This, he said, was not connected to the burns or medication.
