  • Dr Michael Elves, president of the Verulamium Rotary Club, presents the cheque to Sister Beverley Earnshaw of the Breast Clinic.

A rotary club gave the Action for Breast Cancer (ABC) campaign a cash injection of £2,000 on Wednesday afternoon.

Verulamium Rotary Club, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, raised the funds through a series of street collections and a gruelling sponsored cycle ride.

With the help of our readers, the ABC appeal will raise more than £260,000 for vital equipment at the news breast cancer care clinic at City Hospital.

President of the 40-strong club Dr Michael Elves said: "We felt this was an extremely important new development in . We know that breast cancer can be treated if it's caught early enough.

"It's no longer a death sentence and early diagnosis is critical. The club's chair of community services, Martin Collett, visited the clinic and was very impressed with the facilities and the number of women it was helping."

He added: "Verulamium Rotary Club is very conscious that its funds are raised by the generous donation of local people from and we can identify no better appeal to support than the new breast cancer care clinic."

Since 2000 the club, which meets every Tuesday night at The Old Albanian's Sports Club, in , has helped raise more than £120,000 for charities across the world.

About 30 per cent of their funds go towards overseas projects, such as aid relief for people affected by the Asian tsunami and the recent earthquakes in Pakistan.

The rest goes towards UK charities, which are either based or have a branch offices in . The group will be fundraising outside Morrisons store, in Hatfield Road, from Friday, December 2 to Sunday, December 4.
