A HOSTEL for homeless people will close, St Albans District Council confirmed tonight.

Ridgeview in London Colney will close on August 9, next year meaning its 64 vulnerable residents will need to be resettled over the next 12 months.

Council leader Robert Donald once again stressed at tonight's cabinet meeting that occupants would not be turfed onto the streets as a result of the closures, but re-housed.

While it is estimated it will take a year to find alternative housing for residents, councillor Donald said the proposed closure date would be re-considered if suitable accommodation had not been found for all Ridgeview residents.

Speaking at the meeting, housing officer Linda Middleton said one-to-one interviews had been held with 39 of the 64 occupants to find the right housing solution for them. Homeless shelters including Open Door aswell as council and housing association flats may be used as temporary accommodation in the meantime.

St Albans District Council said it would use some of the cash from the sale to develop modern temporary accommodation for vulnerable people aswell as supporting the cost of replacing the deteriorating Westminster Lodge leisure Centre.

It is not St Albans District Council that has decided to use money raised from the sale of Ridgeview to fund a new leisure centre. It is the Liberal Democrat administration that has made that decision. Labour councillors opposed this decision as we strongly believe that any money raised from the sale of Housing assets should fund new social housing, given the acute shortage in St Albans District.

I’m afraid this decision has made me feel quite queasy. I really don’t like the idea in principal of using cash from the sale of this sort to part fund a sports facility. Sport is fun, however money raised on the back of selling a property currently used by those not having the best of times is just not on for me.

St Albans, I feel is becoming less supportive of our more senior residents along with those of any age that need a helping hand, which grieves me.

Will those tree-hugging citizen-loathing LibDems say how much of the cash from the sale of Ridgeview will be allocated towards the development of "modern temporary accommodation for vulnerable people", how much this accommodation will cost, where it will be, what temporary actually means, who will be eligible and who qualifies as vulnerable?
